  • 100% Quiet overflow box (very simple)

    Hello guys...

I know you guys are thinking there is no way of making a overflow box completely quiet.. well i will show yall how simple this fix is..after so many weeks of hearing the dam thing i just got tired of it.. so i did a massive research today(not...lol) on "how to quiet overflow box", but all the process of how to fix it was quite ridiculous like the stockman pipe and dorso pipe... and i sat there and watched a overflow box video over and over.. until i find the fix and boy was it simple..there are 2 points on the overflow that need to be a certain way in order for it to be quiet.. first the water flowing down the box (the waterfall noise) and second the water going through the pipe to the wet/dry (the slurping noise).. with that point said i found a fix... with this fix there is no need for a dorso stand pipe or stockman..this fix is virtually noiseless and i have a vid to prove it.. here it is

    Tools:
    • PVC cutter
    • Tape measure(not necessary but its good to have)

    Materials:
    • A section of PVC that fits the the bulkhead in your overflow box (about 1') (it will be cut down)
    • Airline hosing
    • Airline valve
    • sheet of styrofoam

    Steps:
    1. TURN OFF your pump so that the overflow can drain completely
    2. take the old pvc tube that is in the overflow box out
    3. put the new section of pvc tube in the overflow box
    4. measure to where the overflow portion is at and add approx 1cm (no more then 1 inch)
    5. remove the pvc and cut it
    6. place it back in the overflow box
    7. cut a section of airline hosing (eshopp method of reducing noise)(about 2') put the valve onto the airline hosing
    8. TURN ON so the overflow can start running again
    9. place the airline hosing into the pvc pipe
    10. adjust the valve accordingly until you see no siphoning (should be completely silence by now)
    11. cut the piece of stryofoam to fit the overflow box and airline hosing... put it in and your DONE!!!

So how is this easier than buying or building a Durso?

b/c all it is... is cutting a new piece of pvc pipe and putting a airline hosing in it... buying/building a durso works but it reduces the flow rate... this does not at all.... basically still the same just longer pipe in the overflow box... ooo and its cheaper take less time to do then making a durso... its up to you though do as you wish... and i also believe this is the quietest a overflow can get there is litteraly no noise... if i can find a way to quit the wet/dry and pump then it will be 100% zero noise... =DD

A Durso does not reduce flow. Your flow is dependent on your pump and the return plumbing, not the size of the drain plumbing.

I have airline tubing going through the Durso stand pipe. By adjusting how far the air hose extends into the stand pipe, I fine tuned the amount of air allowed into the drain hose and thus achieved a truly silent overflow. Like you, I now need to figure out how to silence the return pump and the Vortech circulation pumps.

kinda negated one of the features of the overflow box but to each their own.

The noise from the overflow box is awesome. I sleep with it!

I kinda enjoy the sounds of my tanks. I close my eyes sometimes, and I imagine myself sitting next to a rolling stream.

not when its as loud as mines... your pump is wack so your overflow can somewhat keep the noise down... but when a overflow is handling close to its full potential it gets loud.. you can here that thing from my room... my room is in the far back of the house and the tank is in the front of the house...

When it gets quiet I know to look for flooding or pimps not working....

Overflows are rated "up to" not "should be"....

what the waterfall noise? the feature of an overflow box is to get water from the tank to the sump without losing siphon and its doing that... just with no noise...

That along with surface skimming and added water agitation. Just some of the key features...

there is in the box inside of the tank... and if you tweak the airline just right, there also surface skimming is on the outside box too... look at the video closely it shows the water swirling... and also the airline hosing causes a little aeration in the drain hose which causes agitation... trust me i thought this out b4 posting... lol

Um, it's still surface skimming. The in-tank chamber of Kiko's overflow box is unaffected by their modifications. For someone that claims to know so much about them, you don't really know so much about them...
