  • DIY breeders/fry cages

This is how mine look like. The quilting cross stitch grid is from Hobby Lobby, the small zip ties and insulating board is from Home Depot, and the suction cups are from heater holders.

The one on the left has larger holes and is less rigid compared to the one on the right.

Sorry about the crappy phone pics.

As you can see, I was doing a water change when I took these pics, so I pushed both to one side after detaching the suction cups from the glass. They just float with the water level. Just keep an eye on any obstructions like rock etc. so that the cages won't tip over. Happened to me once.

I started to make some a while back with the exact same materials except I was using fish line to sew the edges together instead of ties. This looks easier and faster.

It would be a neat DIY to make one on sliders that moves up& down with water changes. I don't think it would be very difficult either. Quick visit to hobby center & you got what you need.

That's cool! But you mean cross-stitch grids, right? Sorry, I'm a crafter.

Lol, I had to. But that'll help people find them easier, also... Don't ask people in Hobby Lobby for quilting grids, they won't help you find them.

Those look good. But how do you keep them from collapsing? I tried to build one and the different pieces want to lay againest each other instead of forming a square.

They are pretty rigid and the foam strips I use as floats are also rigid and that helps keep the shape. I cut strips from insulation foam board to make the floats.

What I meant to say was that the foam is a quasi-structural foam when considering the scale of the project

The foam board is similar to this, sold at HD. Just cut strips maybe about 5/8" wide.
