    Re: D.I.Y Co2

Google can be your friend with this... there's many recipes out there. Basically, sugar, yeast & h2o. You're just trying to start a little fermentation. Basically get a glass bottle (1 gal ) and route some airline into it. Pour your solution in and voila CO2 production. There's some minor detail I missed but thats basically it...

I use a 2 liter coke bottle. Bakers yeast, water, and sugar. Tubing glued in the cap goes up through check valve andcontrol valve. Then down into a powerhead output. Used it for years but Im kinda tired of dealing with it.

depending on the size of the tank, i would use several 2 liter bottles started a week apart so that the pressure stays consistent. you can chain them all together and then run that into a smaller bottle half filled with water so that it bubbles up through the water. this prevents yeast from carrying over into the aquarium. next through a check valve and into the input of a powerhead so that the impellor chops up the bubbles into a mist. the best recipe i found used wine makers yeast dissolved into clear gelatin and sugar. the gelatin is eaten more evenly so the output stays more constant. there are some good posts on this site, use the search button to find them.

I used Jello in mine, when I was doing it. The photo attached below is just to show how my bottle was set up...before I started using Jello.

So I would just get some of those cheap generic brands of jello, mix it up like directed on the box (you can add extra sugar if you want), pour it into the 2 liter bottle and stick it in the fridge to harden. Once it's done, mix up some yeast with a little warm water (to activate the yeast) and pour it on top of the jello in the 2 liter bottle. It slowly eats into the jello, and I found this method lasted longer and was more even. Plus it doesn't smell as bad when you have to pour it out to start a new one.
