  • 58 Gallon Oceanic Sump Conversion

Ok I was given a 58 Gallon Oceanic Aquarium tonight, and I have plans to turn it into a sump for my 210 Gallon. However, I have already hit a road block. The tank with trim is to wide to fit underneath my stand by a 1/4". So here's the question that will make or break this project:

    1. Is it safe to remove the bottom trim from the tank?

    2. What is the easiest way to do this?

I dont mind peoples input, but im really looking for those who have done this, to speak up or those who have a knowledge about it. I will be doing my own research on the matter as well, but I always like to post and ask people here.
    Ill be here waiting.......

Remove the trim, it won't be holding a full tank of water so you should be fine.

If you end up not using it hit me up, I could use a tank that size

True. Worst case senerio is a power outage. tank will fill with quite a bit of water. I think I can leave the top trim on for "bracing".

Are you not planning on putting in baffles? If you are that size tank would rival some of the larger wet/dry available so it wold be more than enough if you position the baffles right.

I was thinking about setting it up just like a wetdry would be normally, but i'm well open to suggestions. Please by all means, gimme ideas. Ive seen many done. I was toying with the idea of a refugium in it as well.

search the DIY section of MFK, there's some awesome ones over there, or search K1 setups cause that would be similar to what you would want to use for a refugium.

Agree with Q. If I was to do it again I would do the fluidized media instead of bio balls Or you can look on YouTube for the fluidize k1 filter.

EK give me a run down on the baffling idea when you get a minute.

I plan on doing both when I build the new tank or actually three, Pond Matrix, Fluidized and bio-balls. There are pros with all three that I can't pick one over the other.

It's hard to explain the baffling thing which pictures would explain much better than I ever could. Search images or search on MFK cause I saw some really nice builds over there.

I'm 90% on doing this but I'm still looking for opinions on removing the bottom trim from the tank.

Well this is what i've come up with thus far. Keep in mind I will be drawing up new plans based on advice and personal preference. I may change it all a figure out the best way to split this I can have a K1 setup included. I have to say though I do like the way I have it drawn out, but im still looking for advice on removeing the bottom trim from the aquarium.
