      Do you have a link/s?

Right now, the two 2262 under my 280 is filled with K1 and topped off with two layers of white filter floss and one bonded blue pad. So adding a single 2" layer of 20ppi foam is what I'm looking to do.

I didn't save the link, but I can try looking for it. I copied down how they set up their eheims for future reference. This was one of the setups. Instead of the foam on top, you could use some poret foam?

        Bottom layer- 5L EhfiMech
2nd layer - one 2" thick piece of Poret 10PPI media
3rd layer - less than 1" of 100% Premium Polyester Fiberfill by Fairfield
4th layer - one 2" thick piece of Poret 20PPI media
5th layer - approx. 5L of Ehfi Substrat Pro & Substrat, in a coarse media bag
Top layer- one 1/2" thick piece of black foam from LFS

Wow, they use three layers of foam...

Starting to sound like the 20ppi Poret foam layer on top might actually work.

I clicked yes based on what i think will work, but i havent run them side by side. I currently running 2" 20ppi and 10ppi and a rena filstar with good results. i dont know how much polishing it is doing since i am also running a magnum 350 on that same tank. Stefan (the owner of swisstropicals) recommends no more than 30ppi for canisters and will sell an unlimited number of sheets at that flat shipping rate (!) From one of my many emails with Stefan:

"In order to capture fine particulate you would need filter mesh of about 30-50 microns, which no filter material is really doing. Even the canister or HOB filter with the help of bacteria. The clean filter material cannot capture fine particulates but the stick filter sludge will, no matter what filter type....I would expect that filter to last about 2 years between maintenance. "

so his opinion is that overcleaning the fine filter pad can actually reduce performance. of course, he is a strong proponent of the Hamburg MattenFilter and would never use a canister filter again so his viewpoint is derived from his experiences with HMF.

Although 20ppi isnt normally considered a polishing sponge, the typical sponges arent 2 inches thick either. I expect that the thicker pieces do trap more fine particulates due to the creater surface area and a more toturous path through the media. I suspect that the pathways through the poret foam are superior to the typical bonded pad or filter sponge so manitenance should be easier. I havent been using it long enough to definately say however.

Yep. This was another setup but without the 3 layers of foam, but then again, it's similar because this one is using a 4" piece of 10PPI

              Bottom layer - 5L EhfiMech
2nd layer - one 4" thick piece of Poret 10PPI media,
3rd layer - 2 thin pieces of Soft N Crafty Premium Density Batting,
4th layer - one 2" thick piece of Poret 20PPI media,
5th layer - approx. 5L of Ehfi Substrat in a coarse media bag

I think I clicked no. But with only one layer of 2" poret foam, I would still keep it at no. If you use more than more than one layer of foam, then my vote would be yes.

i am actually using mine in two different baskets with a layer of efimech in between to prevent channeling. i dont have any scientific reason why i like to but something in between layers of foam but it just seems like the thing to do.

That still has three layers of mechanical (10ppi, batting and 20ppi) and the batting has to be replaced.

Thinking of adding a 10ppi layer at the bottom, but that might not be needed with the K1 media.

I think there's something to what Stefan says about sludge in the Poret foam capturing particles even though it's only 20ppi and not finer.

Also, the amount of foam in the Eheim will be about the same or even greater than the amount of sponge in an FX5.

But you didn't like it though

Also, I have to buy 6 canisters worth so I don't want to pull the trigger on a whim.
