  • Bonded blue pad vs. Poret 20ppi Foam

I recently found out that adding a bonded blue filter pad along with two layers of white filter floss pads helped my Eheims catch fine particles very well. Now I'm considering replacing all three with one 2" layer of 20ppi Poret foam which I can clean and reuse many more times than the bonded blue pad and also not have to use white filter floss pad. It is a matter of cost savings because I'll be servicing 6x canisters in all.

Do you think one 2" 20ppi Poret foam layer will do as good a job as one layer of bonded blue filter pad and two layers of white filter floss pads?

The padding density. Is it the equivalent of the the others together?

Not sure, because I haven't ordered the foam yet.

The foam in FX5 filters is about 10ppi and that does a decent job with particles and I've always like how well FX5 clears particles, so I was thinking 20ppi would be better as the last layer in a Eheim. Poret also sells a 30ppi foam but that will clog up pretty fast. I can definitely say that a bonded blue pad layer and two white floss layers in a Eheim results in more fine particles filtered out compared to an FX5 with sponges and no additional mechanical filtration.

It sounds like it would give the desired results but I'm not sure I'd buy enough for all of them. Maybe test run it on one tank first.

It's cheaper to order all at once because it's flat rate shipping.

Yeah, but I'm trying to minimize recurring costs in replacing filter floss

Ah. Then id wait for more responses to this. I understand where your coming from on cost effectiveness though.

That's the main point of this thread and poll, to save $ as long as somewhat similar results are had from both options.

well the thicker the perot is the harder it is to clean :(. If you are going to still use floss it wont hurt
