And you can remove the HOB overflow if you decide a wet/dry or sump isn't for you. With a internal overflow box, you probably need to drill to get the maximum potential. I honestly don't know how else would you get an internal overflow to work without drilling.

are you just wanting to use the overflow as a surface skimmer?75G Standard - High Light Planted Community Fish

i guess it would work fine if you just wanted to remove surface film, if the water fell down through a foam block then most of the proteins could be collected there and removed for a quick rinse when u wanted to.75G Standard - High Light Planted Community Fish

I guess you could build an overflow in the corner which would work as a surface skimmer, but you would need to find a pump that would fit inside the overflow. Then you would need to build a durso pipe that connects to the pump directly where it pulls in water. Then you would need a return pipe connected to the pump that would bring the water out of the overflow area.
Essentially its the same setup that you would need for a reef ready tank that flows into a sump, except it would all be contained inside your overflow.
As for its effectiveness in doing anything for a salt water tank I have no idea.
