Looking for DIY pre-filter ideas for my return pump. The one I hastily made is cutting my flow by at least a third. I've got a 1" threaded suction. My other idea was to take a short piece of larger pvc and drill a thousand holes in it and cover with a filter sock. Lets see what you are running and hear some other ideas.

they key is to allow the most surface area for filtration so you can get the most flow with the least pressure drop. this is why many sumps have the return pump in a partition where the water must first pass through a large filter sponge. for pond use, the whole pump is put into a filter box that has filter batting wrapped around it. i have used this method before in palludariums.75G Standard - High Light Planted Community Fish

Got a Quiet one 6000 that sits in the sump. My filter isnt at the stage I want it to be so I used some poly-fil in one part and pieces get loose every once in a while.

I put a threaded strainer on the intake of my mag5, got the piece @ city pets. You could then slip a sponge over the strainer to act as a prefilter.30Long: L134 Leopard Frog Plecos X16, Corydoras Sterbai X9, Endlers X4

I went ahead and made another filter sock and drilled some holes in a piece of 1-1/4" pvc that is about 6" long. Slipped the sock over the pvc and used a coupler to connect to a 1-1/4" slip x 1" threaded bushing. Flow is much better than my previous attempt.
