  • 75 FW Build

Upgrading my 55 to a 75. Doesn't seem like a big change, but my 55 was unable to have a wet/dry while this 75g will have a 30g wet/dry. When I move, this 75 will be the upgraded tank of my 40b reef tank. But for now, it's going to have my troph colony in it.

It's an old Oceanic reef ready tank. Nice and heavy tank.. made with 3/8" glass all around and the big glass center bracing. One sturdy tank.

The sump is a 30gal long (36"). Will be a DIY wet/dry with pot scrubbers in a 5g bucket. The pre-filter will be 200 micron socks on rotation. Switch them out every other day. I will also keep a 2217 on the tank with half blue filter pads, half pot scrubbers for more mechanical. Making my list for home depot now, and will get it plumbed and water in it friday

Finished my Durso Standpipe for my drain. The guy who came up with the design mentions to make the standpipe one step bigger than the bulkhead. I have a 1" bulkhead so I used 1 1/4" pvc for the standpipe. Although I couldn't find an explanation on why to make the pipe bigger, he just said it works better. So I took his word.

Also went through and added my blue painters tape to the back of the tank to protect the new touched up paint from new scratches/chips.

Finished up my wet dry. My drain will be filtering into 2x micron socks as a pre-filter. That'll be changing out every few days as needed.

Ended up reorganizing the pot scrubbers. Instead of just tossing them in there loosely, I neatly put them in. Without really compressing them, I was able to double the amount of scrubbers. There's close to 300 in there now

All done. Everything is working perfectly! Just need to let things settle a bit. Already need to change out micron socks soon. Lufubus are loving their new home, dancing away.

Under the stand. Wet Dry and a 2217

Plumbing - Left is drain, right is to my return pump. Drain is a 1" bulkhead, split it with a T, so I can use 2x micron socks. Let changes needed. Hopefully I'll end up having to change them only once a week. They sure are collecting a whole lot of garbage!

My drain/return. Shows the water line. Water only drops a couple inches into the overflow so its real quiet when I shut the stand doors.

Few hours later, it's all nice and cleared up! I just need to clean those last couple coralline spots on the front glass.

Funny how this one 5 gallon bucket of pot scrubbers is better than 4 eheim canisters. Tank hasn't been this clear in years. And with changing out filter socks as only means of maintenance... much less work involved too. I'm working on making similar wet/drys on all of my other tanks at a smaller scale.
