There is something wrong with this canister. I recently took it off a tank about a week ago. Now I'm trying to get it to work and its not working. I tried to suck all the air out of it, start it several times but the water does not filter. Any help will be greatly appreciate it.

Do you mean it's not priming so there is no flow going through it?

IME, the easiest way to prime the Eheim 2217 and force all the air out:
                      1. Drain the canister and the outlet tube completely.
                      2. Put it back together and open all the valves.
                      3. Suck on the outlet until you can see water starts flowing down and fill the canister. It will fill the canister and push the air out in the process. This take about 1 minute. Shake the canister a little from side to side.
                      4. Plug in.

                      Now try it.

I did all the steps mentioned. However, I bought a couple of sponge filters and found out it does not work with them. I added a SS filter guard and it worked like a champ.

Any suggestions on getting it to work with the sponge filter?

or did you put a sponge filter on the intake val? I've never heard of anyone doing that.

I put a sponge on the intake valve !! I did it with a HOB filter. I have never used a sponge filter before.
