  • Acrylic Repair

I need to get my acrylic wet/dry repaired. I put in an inline return pump and cut my own hole for the bulkhead and did a really poor job, resulting in slow leaks. I tried to do repairs twice and have now fired myself.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable place that would repair this? My wet/dry is decent sized as the tank is 280g. I would really like to get it repaired if possible. My wife won't let me buy a new wet/dry...

    Thanks!

I don't know where u can get it repaired but u can try this to fix it yourself.
Find a piece of 1/8" thick acrylic large enough to cover the hole that u have drilled with a few inches overlap. Clamp it to a piece of wood and take your time cutting a hole in it for your bulkhead. Now the sump needs to be empty and the side you are repairing needs to be clean and dry. Purchase some weld on #3 or #4 and a large hypodermic needle. Weld on will be used to attach your repair piece and the needle is used for control. Lay the sump hole side down. You will be repairing the inside (water side), surface. Draw some weld on into the needle and place a bead around the hole on the sump. Immediately place the newly cut piece making sure to line up the holes on the repair piece and the sump. Hold it there for about 3 minutes. The weld on will cause the acrylic surfaces to soften and bind to each other making them one. Now use the Hypo to lay a bead around the edge of the repair piece. You should see the weld on seeping in between the two pieces. Do the same thing for the inside of the hole. You are trying to weld the entire surface of the repair piece to the sump. Now place a heavy object over the repair. I use a brick wrapped in duct tape. Leave it for a few hours and that should do it. Your bulkhead should have a new perfect surface to seal against. Good Luck. Hope this works out.
