Have you thought about running 2 or 3 in a series? Changing out the first one after so many gallons. Then rotating the next one to the front. Reload a new one for last. Maybe a pre-filter or sand filter at the front?

Thank you for good thought to rotation the filter it make filter last longer. I have one 3 in series of 10 inch filter and it work great ( for my store fish tank ). And this one I use at home and I move around a lot so I just do one filter .

That filter is pretty hot. My only concern would be contact time with the carbon since it looks like its 20" of media with pretty quick flow, running 2-3 in series would fix that nicely though. Either way, any carbon is better than no carbon. This is much cleaner looking than snakes! Just looked up the 20" chloramine carbon blocks and BRS has one for 36.00 if you didn't want to mess with refillable cartridges.
Chloramine is becoming more common as an alternative to chlorine for water treatment and must be treated differently. Chloramines are different than chlorine, which is used by most municipalities to treat the city water supply. Chloramines are chlorine reacted with ammonia to create a more stable disinfectant that will remain in the water rather than gassing off. At least 10% of the nation’s water supplies now treat their water with chloramines and this is becoming more and more common.   Treating with standard carbon blocks can result in the addition of ammonia and other compounds harmful to an aquarium. The Pentek ChlorPlus Carbon Block promotes additional reactions which result in water safe for fish and corals.    If you are unsure if your city uses chloramines, call your city water supply company and ask them directly or ask for a water quality report. To find the number for your water treatment facility check your water bill or call city hall.   Recommended filter arrangement for chloramine treatment when using the Chlorplus Carbon Blocks Stage One - Sediment filter Stage Two - Pentek ChlorPlus carbon block Stage Three - Pentek ChlorPlus carbon block   Note: With advancements made in filter technology we now supply BRS Universal Carbon Blocks and include them on all of our BRS Universal RODI Systems which we would recommend for chloramine filtration over the ChlorPlus Carbon Blocks. If you wish to upgrade your current system to utilize BRS Universal Blocks you can easily change out any catalytic carbon cartridges and ChlorPlus filters for Universal Carbon Block filters.    Specifications: 1 micron rated filter – Nominal* Chloramine Reduction: 2,500 @ 0.5 GPM Chlorine Taste and odor: 50,000 Gallons @ 1GPM Media : advanced bonded powdered activated carbon *Nominal rating will remove >85% of particulate of given size from water with single pass filtration.

Good stuff, I'll be making one of these for sure

When I buy the Refill Cartrige from Bulkreefsuply and I speak the sale man and he told me the 2lb of Catalytic Active Carbon in the 20inch cartridge I t will last longer than the chloramine carbon blocks and save money on long run. so I buy the refill and I know it cheaper if I buy the chloramine carbon blocks. But Andrew you have a good point for everyone. Thank you
