Is it OK for me to tag along? Would it be OK for me to bring some friends?  Don't you just love a guy who invites everyone and their dog?

Yeah ... that would be great! Actually,if anybody else wants to come, let me know. We can make an expedition out of it. If alot of people want to come, we should probably go geoff_tropheus' relative's land. I'm free anytime during the summer. When is everyone else free (who wants to come)?

          Re: Texas Holey Rock

My friends and I have a meeting at Fish Ranch II tommorrow and we are going to make Raul, rrocket2002 our safari committee chairman. We have a safari to the Xiphophorus stock center in San Marcus Friday July 28 and an online election Saturday July 22. I am unaware of any other commitments we may have made. It would be good to put a calendar event on this website and at my friends website if you want to put together a big group. Of coarse we have to know when everyone wants to go first.

I think geoff_tropheus has some friends too. Come to think of it I think Scott does also. We are all friends on this website.

I will get ahold of my Aunt so that I can contact her brother and see how he feels about having people over to go on a rock hunt so to speak.  I do not think there will be any issue whatsoever.

            I just need to ask...

Also, I am sorry that I could not attend your meeting yesturday at the Fish Ranch, but I am interested in your other trips.

            Is there a fee?

            Thanks,

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. What all came out of the meeting on Saturday? Do you have to me a "member" of some society to go on these trips and expeditions?

Not at all. Actually it is your Aunt and your trip geoff_tropheus. We, the Houston Livebearers Association just want to go along if it is OK with you and your Aunt. We try to advertise our safaris here at the HFB and at the HLA:

No one has to belong to anything to go on any of our trips. If someone wants to belong to the HLA there are no dues or fees. We have collected fish in Jacinto City/Galena Park and Armonds Bayou in the past. We have a trip planned to visit the Xiphophorus center in New Braunfields this month. It is a calendar event on a Friday here at the HFB. It might be close to the holey rock location. If it is and you want to we could do both together. ( collect holey rock the next day - Saturday )  Collecting the holey rock is your trip. The Xiphophorus center is a big warehouse full of swords and platys where they do cancer research on the fish. They have a big budget and know the genetics of these livebearers. One of the things they are going to do is to demonstrate how to artificially inseminate a fish. We did make Raul the HLA safari chairman by the way.

                  Re: Texas Holey Rock

From what I understand, we more than likely would have to dig up the limestone and it would prolly be in rather large pieces.  It also will prolly be rough looking to the eye and touch.  I think the nicer ones in the stores are smoothed artificiallly.  Sandblasted or something or another.....

The trip sounds great, but everyone should know that it will not be like picking up fallen apples off the ground in a apple tree farm....LOL.

And yes....I believe I am the safari chairman for HLA.  I am considering some things for August.  We as a group have fun meeting and trying to catch some native species.  I wonder how PhishPhreek's Brackish water Flounder is doing?  Anyways, instead of fishing poles, we use minnow traps and casting nets and other type of nets......I was thinking of using a car battery, but that would prolly take the fun out it.

We would be more than happy to have anyone come along for the fun.

The Flounder did great until I ran out of live shrimp.

Guess he never had seen pelets or flake food before.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                      Re: Texas Holey Rock

I hate to hear that. I have been reading up on the southern flounder and thinking about stocking a pond with them. Well the breeding is still very complicated but the scientist are working on it. They are supposed to adapt to fresh water very well. I think the pellets are supposed to be the same color as the shrimp. They start out on artemia. and move to artemia colored sinking pellets if I remember right. They want to stock all females because they grow out bigger. Its still experimental. They turned a few loose here in Texas recently.

                        Re: Texas Holey Rock

Most pieces in the store are cleaned by sandblast or cooked.

As far as having smooth surfaces or not, it all depends on where it is dug/cut.  The holes in the limestone are from ground water moving thru it.  Some of the hole wil be smooth others will not.

The limestone pieces will have to be dug up, and then broken with a sledge hammer into smaller pieces.

Tons of it appear after clearing the land for farming? So its been a long time since any land has been cleared and you can't see any and just have to start digging and hope you find some or it is sticking out of the ground in places and you have to finish digging it up? Could you pry it out with a pry bar? How far is it from the Xiphophorus center and Landa park? They do not allow overnight camping. Would you want to do it the Saturday after the Xiphophorus visit? Is there a place to camp overnight around there?

                            Max,

The holey rock expedition sounds like it needs to be a weekend or week long planned trip.  To plan it right, someone needs to scout out the area and make the neccessary contacts and preparations.
