    Re: Texas Holey Rock

True... but the point of this is (at least for me) to save a bit of money. Texas Holey Rock from Fish R Us (and all other LFS for that matter - I'm not discriminating) are over $1/pound. To fill a 90g -and now a 200g- it would require more funds than I have.

    I appreciate it though.

I'm not supposed to be organizing anything am I? I don't want people to be waiting on me... I'm just sitting here waiting on others.  If someone wants me to do something - (anything really), let me know.

          Re: Texas Holey Rock

I am guilty too.  I need to make some calls.

The rock is not very deep into the ground.  Mostly parts of it are already sticking out.  Anytime he gets out the dozer to clear land of brush, or debris, pieices, bolders start to appear.

We will need trucks, shovels, wheelbarrows, sledgehammers, and lots of elbow grease.

I will let you know within this week what he says.

          Take care,

The drive to Burnet will be about 3.5 Hours from Aquarium World on 290.  I think Aquarium World would be a good meeting place for all those that want to go.

We need to do this on a Saturday, and I think it best we left Aquarium World by 7AM or sooner.

Once we get to Burnet, we could eat lunch, then go dig/gather rocks.  We could do this for 5-6 hours or so, then drive back to Houston and be home by 9-10PM.

            Any other suggestions?

That sounds great! I can borrow a van and a sledge. I can also transport someone else (to save on gas). Meeting up at Aquarium World sounds like a good location. I imagine most people already know where that is.

let me know in advance and i can get off, i know homeless can use my help and i dont really need any of the rock, maybe some of the tiny cast offs (i have small tanks with few cichlids) and there are few things i like more then a long day of labor and a cold beer after. plus i helped Tim move that huge tank into his apartment so i cant help him get enough rock to fill it up.

How does Saturday, August 5th sound to everyone (assuming approval with Geoff)?  That should give everyone enough preparation time. We can use the timeline set forth by geoff_tropheus in his earlier post.

                              Re: Texas Holey Rock

ok so today was my second adventure into the holy rock search, and like i said i have about 65,000 acres of military land at my disposal, well after 3 or 4 creek beds me and my brother stumbled on a couple of really (or what we thought) good pieces.  after lugging what i think was a 40 lb rock about a 1/8 of a mile up a old dried up stream, i finally got it to my truck.  well i got it home and cleaned it up come to find out my was flint, which still had a bunch of 3 inch holes (probably 3 to 4) running through it.  Me being the idiot i am i said give me a hammer and i will take away some of the mass so it won't fall through my aquarium.  not such a good idea cus i chipped to pieces.  the moral of the story is all the places on the internet that are selling it are worth all the trouble cus the must have some kind of system down for getting it to look so good, and all though i can ride around and get as much of it as i want i am going to go to www.ebay.com and buy me some and save me the headache.  happy hunting to all and if you want me to take you out here i can take a few with me and hunt all day, i can go pretty much anywhere on ft hood, with is part of the hill country and trust me its all over the place here to, so bad most people use it as flower garden rock....

                                Re: Texas Holey Rock

ok I got some more information.

August 5th at this time will not be a problem.

My Aunt's sister Tina's land has piles and piles of Limestone and other slate stone.  It rains, and more rock is uncovered. The rock is litteraly everywhere on her land.  My Aunts Brother Eugene also has a bunch, but Tina already has some of it in piles.

It will not take much to dig pieces up, but some pieces will be huge and need a sledgehammer for busting up.

I would like to know about how many at this point intend to go?  I am asking this because Tina sells this rock to people for building fireplaces, campfires, landscaping, and other building materials.  I got the family hookup, and I doubt there will be anycharges.  BUT...I dont want to show up with more than 3 or 4 trucks or so, and intend on taking a ton or more and not pay something.  If we take a couple trucks no problem I believe.

Basically, we need to pay them in beer, and most likely give them 50 bucks or something.  We all know this rock is 1.50-2.00/lb at pet stores, so a little something for them is nothing.

I think we should also intend on picthing some in for each other to cover some gas money, and an ice chest or two full of beverages of choice.

I am going to call Tina Saturday and get the details, I just would like to be able to tell her on how many trucks we intend to fill up.
