  • Defective GE Silicone ll

Thought some might be interested. The good news is I did not use it on aquariums.
I bought 3 tubes of GE Silicone ll (the best one), I used 2 tubes and have the third; batch #07M111 ( I guess they were all the same batch). "Use by " date 11/09.
After 2 months "cure" the worst areas are like peanut butter (in consistancy, not taste). About 1/3 is about like chewing gum. Where it hardened it can be pulled off (of Lexan) in 2 ft lengths with no effort. I have always used only GE silicone , as they invented it I guessed they knew how to make it. GE is selling their plastic division, but I am sure this was manufactured before any change.
In future, when I open a new tube, I will put a sample on/between scrap glass and test it in a few days.
Does anyone have experience (good) with another brand of Silicone RTV ?

I thought you werent supposed to use the silicone II because it had antibacterial stuff in it that could hurt the fish...

or maybe the I had that... cant remember off the top of my head...

GE Silicone I is the preferred silicone because GE Silicone II contains a material that protects against mold and mildew.  This material if it leaches into the water will most likely kill your fish.
I would remove all the silicone you have used and get some GE Silicone I which everyone here on this board who has resealed tanks will tell you is the bomb !

Agree with Strider and Zulaab. GE silicone II should not be used in aquaria. I use GE silicone I when I have to, but prefer Dow/Corning 100% silicone for tank resealing. It's not the easiest to find but it's the best, IMO.
Bohn's Building Materials in Texas City still carries it.

CRL 99AS Clear Aquarium Silicone Sealant is a medium modulus, one component, acetic cure silicone recommended specifically for the fabrication and repair of fresh or salt water aquariums. It forms a tough waterproof seal that won't crack or shrink, and is non-toxic to fish when fully cured after 7 to 14 days. Cure time depends on bead size and cure conditions.

Dow Corning Aquarium Silicone; 100% pure silicone sealant for tank repair/construction
          • Stays Flexible
          • Won’t crack or shrink
          • Waterproof seal
          • Harmless to fresh and saltwater fish
          • Cures at the “proper” rate, unlike many cheap hardware brands that often cure too fast causing a poor seal between glass plates and seams (even if the silicone is designated for aquariums, this does not mean it has Dow Corning’s patented curing formula)

It should come as no surprise that high-end professional aquarium and filter manufacturers don't run to a pet department store for a small tube of generic silicone. Perennator Aquarium Silicone, brought to the US by Aqua Medic, is the finest aquarium silicone available and is the best choice for your critical applications. Available in Black and Clear, Perennator comes in a 310mL tube that fits standard dispensing/caulking guns and includes a trimmable applicator tip.

Great info, Bob. The problems I've had with GE silicone I are that it cures too fast and doesn't cure clear. The dow corning cures clear and you can seal a large tank without having the starting bead hardening by the time you seal back to it.

I believe that the GE and Dow brand silicone has a satisfaction guarantee. The guarantee states something like if not satisfied with the product, return used container ans sales receipt to ....

At least you can get your money back to purchase the another product.

                  Re: Defective GE Silicone ll

I want to find a retail source for Dow silicone RTV. I can't seem to get the right info from their website.
I since remembered the last time I used GE ll in an aquarium ,it did not work well. I attributed it to old material but now - I am looking for Dow products.
I don't worry about the trace of fungicide that may be in the small exposed seam. I have used GEll to attach glass and rock shelves and land (sea) scaping to the inside of aquariums ,no problem. I built/reassembled a 55 with GE ll ; it worked good for about 6 months. No problem with RTV; 3 words you don't want to see in the same sentence-- outside, cantilever, aquarium.

I need to reseal an aquarium, and I am having a hard time finding 100% silicone that is safe for tank reapirs or use. I know a lot people use GE Silicone I but the tube states that it is not to be used for aquariums.

Does anyone know who carries any of the ones below in town.
