  • DIY Wet/Dry Filter - Suggestions?

I know there has been some discussion here but nothing came up when I searched DIY Wet/Dry.  My question is Who here has built, tried, used DIY Wet/Dry systems?  How does it compare to the store bought brands?

I'm a beginner which means no spare parts.  I found this link and like this idea.

Dan from Houston Aquarium Warehouse showed us his DIY wet/dry. Seems pretty simple.

Edit: He used a 5 gallon bucket filled with plastic hair rollers from the dollar store and an aquarium.

            ok here's what I did.
I have one 18 gallon container for the sump (red) -->> from walmart

and the +- 7 gallons circle container for media (white plastic trash can w/ lid & clip) -->> walmart . Drill some holes at the bottom. make sure there are more holes than the trickle tray. alot more.

instead of making a stand for the media container I use 3 small flower pots put upside down.

the trickle tray I got a small food container also from walmart. Found one at the food container isle that fit almost perfectly inside the trash can. i had to trim the edges just a lil' bit but it sits perfectly after that. drew out some lines on its bottom and drill 1/8" holes about 0.5"- 1" apart.

Media: half of them i use +-150 bioballs & the rest are drinking straws cut to 1" in length (cheap from acemart)

and the prefilter white, blue & black sponge thingy I got from HEB (A/C air filter)

Drill the a 2" hole on the trash can lid (or any size slighty smaller than your overflow hose) and its ready to go.

well thats what I did. quick & easy. at the end of the day, you can always add any modification that makes u happy.
            I'm happy with mine.

                    Nice set up!

I have seen the one with the plastic 3drawer deals inside a rubermaid tub....makes cleanup as simple as pulling a drawer.

Great Job.  Thanks for sharing.  Has anyone built the 2 or 3 drawer version?  I'd like to see that too.   :P

So, did you come up with the componets for your new wet dry from a internet article or just think it up on your own, either way.....it's way cool...... :)

Flow rate is determined by pump size and system "head" (how much higher the top of the tank is than the sump)  &the diameter and how many turns you put in the supply pipe.

What would be a good flow rate ?  (I use dual 60 HOB filters on my 55.)
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
