what do yall think about using a shower luffa instead of a pot scrubber. The pot scrubber type luffa is more dense but water still flows freely. More contact time. What yall think?

Re: Pot scrubber alternative
I was wondering if they would work too......I seen one laying on the kitchen floor for who knows why...? But it gave me the idea.....
CFTruth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Re: Pot scrubber alternative
I think it would work fine.
Anything that will give you a surface area which to grow additional bacteria will work marvelous.
Potscrubbers work really well too, I dont think that Luffa's would be any different.
You just have to remember that anytime you use DIY media, that you dont get something not safe for aquatics, and there is always some question about wether your filter rated for a 300 gallon aquarium is now rated for that again.

Re: Pot scrubber alternative
I think luffas are natural materials. If they are, then they'll eventually start to biodegrade. Could cause water quality issues as they decompose. If they're synthetic material then there probably won't be any issues.
edit: Loofahs come from the skeletons of sponge gourds. They will decompose when immersed for long periods of time.

Re: Pot scrubber alternative
geoff I haven't figured on a pump yet.
Wesley if I could post a pic from my phone I'd show u. Not the natural Loofas but the new plastic pot scrubbber type ones.
I was buying pot a scrubbers atthe dollar store and my wife threw in loofas. She bought like 10 of them for a dollar a piece usually there 2 or 3 bucks. Anyway lady at counter asked me what I was gonnna do with all the potscrubbers and I told her. Then she asked what the loffas where for. I told her to bath with and she laugh and said she though maybe something with my fish. That's How I though of it.

Re: Pot scrubber alternative
I've read that chopped up pvc pipe works good... on my pond filter I'm going an extra step and tumbling it in a 5 gallon bucket with rocks and pool filter sand to rough it up a little
just sit in front of the tv with the pvc cutters and go to town.
even better if you can find a neighbor or someone that is repiping their sprinkler system or something so you can get it for cheap/free
