Re: algea filter
It will....algae will grow where it has the best opportunity to so if you provide a spot for it to grow and thrive then it will stay there and like plants it will soak up nutrients but with less requirements.
It's like those dead spots in your tank that get a lot of light..... algae just blooms in that one spot.
Probably better ways of doing it though since you are the DIY KING!700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: algea filter
Put it outside...or blast it with some intense lighting....it's like walking along a pond and slipping cause the rock/ground is covered in algae.
If you could somehow get a large container and have the water trickle over some serious slate and light blasting it you will get a much denser mat of algae since the the rock will be more porous then a sheet and that will trap nutrients where algae will thrive.
Could probably think of a lot of other ways too..... plant filters/mangrove farm/etc700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: algea filter
fshfrk, here's an article by Robert T. Ricketts about veggie filters. He uses them in his extensive aquarium systems. He's a retired biologist and contributor to TFH magazine and several forums.
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Re: algea filter
thanks EK& Westley, that was a good read. now i have to make a veggie filter, along with the algae scrubber. and thats a good thing. i know one guy on cichlid forum loves mangroves. hopefully i can cut back on all these water changes.200

Did you ever make the algae filter? If so, did you run into any 'gotchas'? I'm going to make one but wanted to see if you ran into any problems that I can avoid. Our Fishhouse

No I made the sump with the mangroves instead. the mangroves out compete the algae for the nitrates and phosphates. I can't even grow algae rocks in the sump.with 2 24" grow lights. but the mangroves are growing like crazy. I have a plan to make the scrubber though. you know those acrylic literature holders that buisnesses have at the front desk. drill a hole high for imput with a tube and a small pump. one low for out put. place in sump. with the plastic canvas inside. a pair of small 9 watt power compact light on the outsides.paint everything else black and make a lid. I think this will work. (:200
