  • diy sponge filter"does it work?"

hey guys, just made 4 sponge filters for my fry tanks. i could find anything on utube. so i looked at some on aquabid, the only thing is they dont show a brake down of there stuff. but maybe any of u guys with these can tell if they look right. i know theyre not pretty but functional

i cut tile into 4" peices, then took 3/4" pvc and cut it to where it was just long enough to break the surface of the fry tank, about 6". i then drilled several holes aprox.3/8". i bonded them together with a 2 part poxy,i found a giant bio sponge for pond filters in some hole in the wall of a place. still havent found any more.cut the sponge down to about 4" squares. it was round so i had some scrap.i got six out of it. i got them all tied into 1 pump and a 5 way adjustable junktion.im pretty sure it works, i just dont have anything to compare it to.

I would say you did it great. I dunno if 4 sponges would be necessary for a fry tank, but don't listen to me. The ones I've made I put gravel inside the pipe to give the sponge more weight but I really like your bases. Should work good for ya.

            Good Job

Mine are made with 4" ceramic tile and a 4x4x4 block of foam glued to the tile with silicone. the 3/4" pvc is removable and cut with slices on a saw rather than drilled holes.
An inch below the top of the PVC pipe there is one angled hole for the air line to enter the pipe and the air stone keeps it from comming back out.

I use Azoo filters in my spawn tanks. they are small enough to fit inside a beany box. But I still use the 4" cubes in my growout tanks 15g and above.
