Personally i would only us dry powdered food only if i absolutely cannot get BBS.
I used to use it when i was breeding bettas. They were a mess and fowled the water way too easily. Even after siphoning they left an awful slime at the bottom of the tank. With bettas, they don't readily eat anything that doesn't move, the survival rate is far less than if fed with BBS, they starved to death.
If they are eating, you'll see their stomach bulge. With BBS this is easy because their stomach will turn orange. If they are not eating their bellies should stay silver.
For the best chance of survival for your fry, i would highly recommend BBS.
