I need advice on breeding rosy reds and shiners both of which are in my 200 gallon backyard pond.It is heavily planted with anacharis and hornwort. No substrate yet still deciding between sand and gravel. There is also ghost shrimp in there with some goldfish and koi(still too small to eat any of the fish). Is there anyway i can encourage them to breed I only have 2 shiners will i need more? And i have about 12 rosy reds right now a few of them have grey spots on them.

From what I've read (no personal experience), rosy's don't breed until they are over a year or so old. And they are cave spawners, so if you can create some spaces in your pond for the male to create a nest, that might help. Maybe some small pvc, or you could prop up some pieces of slate on the bottom of the pond to create some little cave-like areas?
Let us know if you get them to breed and what you did to make it happen. Our Fishhouse
