  • When can i change the water?

My green texas eggs hatched friday. Whats the minimum age for them to withstand a water change and how much water do i change? They are in a 30 gal tall tank.

The babies are called Fry and can be considered such until maybe 1.5". I would not do a water change for at least 2-3 weeks. If you just cut back a lil' bit on the amount of food you're feeding the parents, then you will be okay. Actually, go to an "every other day" feeding schedule for the parents. You'll be alright. The fry feeds primarily off of the protective slime (which is part of the immune system) on the mother and sometimes the father (if he tolerates it)...think of it as the fish version of "breast milk". As the fry get older, you will have to "ween" them off the tittie sotospeak by removing them...essentially kicking them out their parents house and getting them their own...b/c they can/will eat so much of their "milk" (slime) that it will compromise their parents health. Think of it in the exact same way as human kids who ultimately become adults and stay at their parents' house much longer than they should. This drains their parents limited resources, which in turns causes unnecessary strain/stress. You will know when to remove the fry when they no longer look like specks of dirt in the tank and start to resemble fish (approx. 3 wks maybe). Then I'll hook you up w/ some fry food to take them to the next level...
