    What a Day

    Well after spending some time last night in water changes I came home to a real nice suprise (although I already received a heads up from my 11 year old via phone).  

    Houston we have fry.

    I heard something about convicts and rabbits and well you guessed convict fry.  All over the place not just one pair but 2 different sets from 2 different parents.  I started with the baster to try and seperate into a 5g tank and well it just doesn't work to well with that many parents around.  fascinating to watch though little things swimming around and man the parents are protective.  Needless to say in a short while I will probably have some free fish to give away.  But wait there's more in the planted tank we have angel fish eggs.  Houston we have fry (or soon to have more)  I think this time we will seperate the angel eggs and see if we can get them to hatch.  Just wanted to share our fun experiences.

    Congratulations !!!!!!!!

    my pink convicts have been great parents to their fry.  I would at least wait 2-3 weeks before separation and if you can wait a month it would be even better.   I am going to end up with like 15 adults from fry in my community tank soon if I don't fish them out in the next few weeks...
    Like you I am most likely going to put them in a 5g grow out tank for a while and then transfer them to a bigger tank later down the road... until I can get mine outta here.

      I had good luck feeding mine BBS with an eyedropper.  
      I would squirt a cloud of baby brine into the tank and all the little convicts would come out of hiding and swarm on them.
      When they got to the size I wanted I could lure them out with BBS and I could swoop down on the fry and net them up.
      The parents were always smart enough to get out of the way.
      'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
      He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

        I used a syringe with a 12inch piece of airline tubing....

          Well I seperated the angelfish eggs from the parents the other night placed in 5g tank and now I have wigglers.  I've been using the blue stuff and 50% water changes last two days.  I guess the plan here is to see how many make it over next few days and become free swimming.  Any advice at this point will be very appreciated.  I understand after they become free swimming got to get the BBS going.  Got a few eggs with white but I can't seperate anymore with a tooth pick because it either knocks the clear eggs off or they stick to the tooth pick.

          The convicts are amazing.  I have 3 sets now.  One male fathered two and spends his time back and forth between the females nest.  Only a fish can get away with that!  I've got several other convicts,red empress,yellow labs in with them do ya'll think the parents being such good defenders can keep the fry from being eaten?  It should be interesting.

          Thanks Phishphreek & fishlady for the fish they really have made this fun and both of yours attributed to all these fry.

            Cberry, awesome news on the convict.. I was wondering what was going on in my tank.. There is only one male who before used to chase the extra female away while he had the first batch, now the second female has been begging him, and he has shown interest, no longer chasing her away.  I am wondering if they are going to lay eggs before I have a chance to move them all into a tank I am making for them all (I have 1m/4f in my community tank right now), and I want to move all the fry and the adults into another tank but its setup is not near finished yet.

            (The last two are hovering near the corner of the tank and never comes out from there except for feeding.  I am hoping soon that will change when I move the fish over to their own species only tank)

              For egg laying sicklids, You will find that it is not uncommon for males to claim terratory 24" dia+/- depending on the size of the tank and other males claims.    while the females only claim & defend their nesting area (6" +/-).  This is why many of the breeders have one male and 2 or 3 females in their colony.

                Congrats on both!

                There are lots of people that can give you advice about angels here on HFB, and convicts, too!  :)

                  Now that the male has shown interest in the second female, the original one has started to chase away the old fry (now more than 7 weeks old) and is like "hey over here, come look daddy no more fry in the house"
                  I am going to need to pick up a 10G and change out the QT tank and make it a 10G grow out tank.
