  • Hungry thief!

Got a new pair of borleyi on Sunday at the auction, came home yesterday and they were in the middle of breeding on top of a nice flat rock that sits on top of a stack of rocks. Only problem is, they attracted the attention of a large red zebra who decided that every single egg she laid should be part of his dinner. It was painful to watch, they'd get to doing the dance, egg would hit the rock, male would do his thing, and before she could spin around and get it in her mouth, BAM it was gone. I felt bad for them, but what can you do...

Maybe feed the zebra more food? Sorry to hear it happened. Sometimes, there's nothing you can do other than separate the fish once you know it's a problem.

I have a pair of pelvicachromis that keep breeding. They are highly successful in laying and fertilizing the eggs, caring for them as wigglers, but as soon as they become free swimming, they fail to watch them close enough, and the babies always get eaten. Then the pair go back at it again with another spawn. I'm beginning to think the only way they'll ever be successful is if I take out all the other fish in the tank. Seems they like the breeding part, but not so much the parenting part!

It's no big deal to me. There is another borleyi female in there, he appears to have gotten to her with no interference from the zebra! I'm sure he'll give it another attempt with the other female as well. Was just kind of funny to watch.
