  • what gen are they?

ok if i bought 2 different sets of F1 colony and 1 from each colony interact what are the frys called?

i can clearly tell the difference b/w the first set i got and the second second b/c the second set were way larger then the first set.. the dominant male is from the second set and is always a a bit skinnier... overall the first set were more stubbier and chubbier if that's a word... lol

Exactly how far do you keep track of generation in fish? I occasionally see F2 mentioned, but always assumed that after F1 they were considered TR (though I suppose F1 would be as well). Guess its just used to suggest they might manifest richer color? or perhaps they might have a more diverse genetic makeup?

        agree with the others,

Normally after F1/F2 I just call them fish.

so they're F2? when there are 2 F1 different colonies? scientifically that is not correct.... scientificlly 2 1st generation of adults causes a sub generation of the 1st generation frys... which i would be called it sub-1st gen... not second generation... in order to continue a generation of a kind it must stay in the same family so basically m/f->same m/f kids-> and continue from the same family....if thats correct.. this is why i put a poll up...

I thought you was asking if the fry from two separate F1 colonies would be F1 or F2? I would think anything that's a fry from any F1 would automatically be considered F2

so you are saying they should be called F1 of F1 parents?

According to the masses the F denotation is to state what generation past the Wilds.
By your post you should call your fish TankRaised.

You can call them F1 from F1 parents that are from different colonies or just call them TankRaised, whichever is easier to you or make it even easier and say F2.

Yes they are F2 from different bloodlines but it is still the 2nd generation of the original wilds.

I was of the opinion that the F# was the generation, thus you have wild caught (F0), First Generation (F1), Second generation (F2), and so on. I believe if you breed two different collections of F1's you will have F2's, albeit with a wider genetic diversity in yours.

                        Honestly though....

Grow out your colony to a larger size, they are tiny now and keeping them in the small tank and allowing them to mature is not gonna help.
If they get some size on them just tell everyone your colony is wildcaught and that will help the sale.

But honestly, with all the lack of credible sources of where the fish came from around here I would just call all Tropheus just fish. I would not take into account of F# cause there is no telling what they are unless there is a direct proof of source.

Any kind of information on their origin would suffice.

Most, when asked will just say they are such and such which I got from my friend's, baby momma's, brother, who brought them in with his cousin who got them as wilds.

IME, which is mainly with cattle breeding, this is how it goes.... If you breed a pure bred Hereford bull with a purebred Brahman cow, you get an F1 Braford. If you breed two F1 Braford to each other you get an F2.
