My tiger oscars have just laid eggs and are now picking at them. We have taken out all tank mates (besides the oscars) and they seem to have calmed down. What do I do to hatch the eggs if they make it? As of now they are on the under gravel filter so i can not move them. Also how often do they spawn. Thanks!

If the eggs are viable, the parents should take care of them without any help from you. They will also clean and herd the babies for a few more days once the fry are free swimming but after a week you should probably pull some of the babies to insure that there are some left. Often in fish as emotional as the oscar the parents will eat the eggs and/or babies the first several breedings before they actually raise the brood. Subsequent spawnings depend on water changes and how much food is being fed and what type of food is offered. I hope your experience turns out to be a positive one. Congratulations on your spawn!

RobertScarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

They will lay between 500-1000 eggs at a time depending on the size of the female. They will defend their fry and will pick out any white (unfertilized) eggs. You will see wigglers in about 3-4 days after they where laid.. you will see swimmers after about 7 days and then they will go out search for food.
You will see a swarm of them under the parents.. it looks funny :)
If all goes well you should end up with about 100-200 oscar babies and you can put them in a grow out tank. (you will need something like a 100g tank for them) and in about 3 months time I would be contacting your LFS around you to see if they would like to trade some oscar young for something that they carry... like food :) :) :)
