schance -- here is what I would do.
Setup the tank with Leslie's PFS, and a good open rock work. I like the look of holey rock, but I have found that having well placed stacks of river rock or boulders works quite well.
Put a heater in the sump set to about 78-80 degrees
Put one or two power heads (maxijet 1200 and then buy the eco mod or go get two Koralia 4's) and your fish will love you :)

Water changes once a week, and with a timer on your lights (electronic timers at Homedepot / lowes for $10) for about 10-12 hours (to grow algae, will allow your fish to graze which will add to their health.

Get with John Fshfrk and build a carbon filter. His 15ft 1.5" spa hose snakes are the best. You will not need to use prime again after this only when you have an emergency.

Then look around for someone who is selling juvi's of the kind you want, and get about 25. Then let them grow out in your tank, and have a nice colony of about 18-20 when full grown (considering there is a chance you can have a little loss from aggression between the males)

You will be VERY happy with what you end up with in time.

Feeders... Eheim 3581 air feeder simply one of the best designs and right now about $40 on drsfostersmith

      OK, I finally voted.

I think you should go with a biotope set-up for apsitos. Get some cool woods and dead leaves. Make it like black water type set-up.

Keep a massive group of apsitos and maybe another massive schooling fish colony of your liking.

      Should be a cool set-up.

get WC apsitos man. A large group. Like 4 males and 20 females. That would look really clean.

When all the females breed you have wigglers all over the tank.

betta sub-forum. Check out the leaves they use. That's what I would get. The leaves have a lot of positives, changes water conditions and even has medicinal properties.

Like you said.. get about 24 Juvi's let them grow out. Maybe even a few more and if its the color you like you will really love them as they grow out.
There are plenty of juvi's out there and so you should be able to find something you like.

If you where feeding ocean nutrion veggie , that's probably where your problems came from... I went thru about 20 to 25 trophs, before I figured out it was the food killing them. I even changed them to different tank,{totally different set-up}.. Finally changed the food....haven't lost one since...I am currently feeding NLS cichlid, Aquadine spirulina, and Hykari Excel (I think)....... GO WITH TROPHEUS...you'll be glad you did.
