  • Fish "Poo" Non-Settling Issues..

Hey everyone, I need some creative, "outside the box" solutions to my problem..

Since switching to PFS I've had problems with excess floating poo in my 135 gallon tank. Because the sand compacts AND because Tropheus love to graze on the bottom, they are always kicking up a big "poo cloud" on the far left side of my tank where all the poo settles. This wasn't a problem before because the poo would settle into the porous cracks between the Aragonite and would not kick up.

Any suggestions? I figured some sort of filter would work best in the general area, and right now I've got an Odyssea 550gph powerhead with a double coarse sponge pre-filter, but its not getting the job done.

Would perhaps putting a koralia or tunze down there create an under-current that would force the poo to not settle there any more, but more evenly across the tank? Would this just make for a constant "poo-cloud" across the bottom third of the tank?

    What do I do?

    EDIT: Added pictures:

try getting an Aquaclear 110 with added tube length attachments, put it where it is about 3" from the sand. I do this in my SA tank to get the big "poo" left by my catfish and oscar. it works really well. just be careful not to get too much sand sucked up, as it will ruin the filter.

Well, I really don't want to do an HOB, and even if I did, the "poo-pile" is too far forward for any intake strainer to reach. I'm really stumped! :aua:

This is what you want actually.... if it made its way into the substrate it would rot there.

Man I keep getting an error message when I try and post my full post.

Add a powerhead strong enough to create an undertow and it will keep the poo suspended for the filter to pick up.

Ditto on the stronger powerhead to circulate the poo....feed less if possible without causing any stress or tension.

Thanks for all the advice and compliments. I'll see about adding a powerhead to the bottom to get some under-current going.

As for feeding less, I think I'm feeding them the minimum now! I can't let them starve!

Starting when the lights come on at 10am, then every three hours after. So 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, and then nothing until the lights go out at 10pm.

That's probably the reason your fish look so healty and colorful, mine get fed once a day, after I get home from work.

On a side note, I'll be looking to get more NLS soon, if anyone wants to organize another group buy for it....

Add some veggie/spirulina flake to their diet. I swear that's where they get their color. NLS is where they get their size.

                          (all unscientific editorial of course...)

To be exact, I feed them a couple times after I get home. I give them NLS 3mm sinking pellets right when I walk in the door, then later in the hour, I'll give them a generous helping of spirilina flake.

Sometimes, I'll come back around 10pm and give them a second helping of 1mm NLS as well.

Lights go off about 11pm and dont come back on till 6pm the next day.

Keep in mind, that is just the dubs, I have 9 tanks to feed, some get different foods too.
