  • Ghost Knife Question

Who here keeps black ghost knife fish? I've been feeding mine frozen blood worm. I've read where people trained theirs to eatflakes/pellets. My question is, how can I train mine to do this? I don't nind giving him the bloodworms, but I have to feed him by hand because if I don't my 2 gold tinfoil piggies (I mean barbs) eat it before he even knows it hit the water.

Find a vial or narrow jar where the others cannot get into and put the food in there.

I would get some sinking pellets and mix it with the frozen foods in the jar and eventually the fish will get use to it. Adding a bit of garlic might entice the appetite as well.

Garlic, really? finding something the others can't get into might be a problem, since he also shares a tank w/ a rainbow shark, dino bichir, bp, gourami and choco pleco. I have a piece of slate against the front glass and I usually just put the cube into the "cave" and then use my hand to scare the others away, lol

I have a "white" black ghost (actually a mottled color morph). I keep mine with apistos and corys. He does eat flakes and pellets just fine, but he did not have to be trained for this. I think it is more of an issue with the tankmates you have with yours. Because of their different feeding styles, the ghost is having a hard time competing with the barbs. In my case, the ghost gets first pick.

So last night night I experimented when the lights went out (not what you're thinking). AFter I turned the tank light off I took one of my tetra cichlid sticks that I feed to my other fish, and I hand fed it to my ghost knife. And you know what, he ate "at" it. I think We may have hit a breakthru here. Thanks guys. I'm gonna keep workin on him.

Here's a pic of my "white" Black Ghost.

I found him at Fish Ranch in Sharpstown last October. It's obviously a color morph of a Black Ghost. There were others with lighter colors, but I really liked this mottled specimen. He has grown considerably in only a few months.
