  • Classroom pet

My girlfriend is starting a new job teaching 3rd grade this year. I have proposed an aquatic pet for a while. I was just wondering what a good one might be, from anyone that has experience with that sort of thing. I don't even know what the school will allow her to have.

So far she really likes albino dwarf frogs over any fish she has seen. I had one once in a guppy tank but it died, had this red bump on it's tummy.

So something low maintenance as I do not want to be there changing water more than about twice a month and something that is easy to keep alive, especially if overfed, which most likely will happen too.

The only classroom pets I remember from Elementary school were Chinchillas and Guinea Pigs. Though my Biology/Aquatic Science teacher in High School had 30+ fish tanks (about half were FW and the other half SW) and she had two turtles in a tank. They had red marks on their heads I think. Does your gf like turtles? The school might be okay with turtles??

EDIT: Okay nevermind. I just saw something on turtles, kids, and salmonella.

Okay new idea: ADFs! :) Here's a good site on African Dwarf Frogs: LINK It says that they eat frozen/freeze-dried bloodworms, frozen/freeze-dried/live brine shrimp, and floating pellets (meant for turtles). I think they sound cool and she can set up a brine shrimp hatchery and it will be even more fun and educational for the kids.

"Hey mommy mommy! Guess what I learned today! Baby shrimp can grow from this little tiny pebbles and we fed them to the little froggies." Lol! It'll be great!

Firebelly toads, just make sure the kids do not kiss them or stick them in their mouth.

not to hijack the thread...but is it legal to keep poisonous frogs? is it possible. I have an empty 20 gallon and I think it would be cool to keep a couple small really colorful frogs. where could I even buy them at?

I'll post a thread when the reptile show is in town. You can get arrow poison frogs there.
