  • coralline algae effects on fresh water fish?

So I'm thinking about buying some used salt water powerhead and putting it on my tropheus tank.

However, the powerhead has coralline algae all over it. The coralline algae doesn't affect the function of the pump. But I'm scared it may or may not effect the chemistry of the water.

Does coralline algae effect fresh water chemistry?

Thanks in advance for the info.

    should not be a problem

have used many like that before

it will go away on its own, turn white and then come off

Should be fine. I have a couple of heaters which are now used in fw tanks with pink blotches. They should be fine.

It MIGHT increase gH & carbonate hardness (and hence pH ) a little bit as the calcium carbonate breaks down. But the amount that typically grows on a pump is typically negligible.

maybe, maybe not. It's 1st gen. Another 100 bucks to upgrade to gen 2.

I can get a new one from city pets for like 330. So I'm still debating.

they scraped it off. There wasnt a whole lot to begin with but, most of the remnants are gone. It was the petros more so than the trophs.
