  • ? about my new cube tank

i just purchased a 24"x24"x12" 30g cube from aquatic world.
i dont know how old it is, but the seals are in great shape.

the only hitch is, i dont have a stand for it

i know a simple 2x4 stand, thats deck screwed together will easilly hold this tank.

my question is, how should i design the stand in order to most evenly distibute the weight of this somewhat odd size tank?
i was thinking x brace on top, bottom, and all 4 sides.
but then getting a canister in an out is gunna be impossible.

    any ideas?

If I had to build a stand for a cube tank, I would use 2x4's and then plywood to skin it.
A simple 4 legs with a ring of 2x4's on top.
Then skin it on left and right side.
Put the back skin piece on with a large hole in it, so all your cables and hoses etc can go in and out of it.
Then put a door on the front allowing you access.
I recommend strongly you install a power strip inside the cabinet up high, and put a timer on the power strip. Now your power is off the floor and will not get wet and all your equipment will fit.
I would then paint the skin before you put your tank on it. This way it will look nice in your house :)

my brother in law is going to help me build a simple 2x4 frame stand tonight

these are the dimensions im going with on the stand.

              the tank itself is 24"Lx24"Wx12"H

the stand is going to be

              25"Lx25"Wx48"T

i want it to be 48" Tall so it can be at veiwing height.
i think it will look great.

i am going to skin it with 1/2" Plywood and stain it with a dark black stain.
then seal it with with poly urethane.

i am going to make the door 36" Tall.
              and use brushed Nickel Hardware.

for filtration i am going to run an Eheim 2217 Canister.
for Substrate i am thinking of using ada aquasoil II and growing either small clusters or a carpet of Crypts.
decor will be driftwood and small clusters of black magma rock.
for lightimg i am thinking of using a single 70 watt Metal Halide Pendant with an 8,000K Bulb.
for a background, i know i want to paint it, but i cant decide on a solid black background or a solid blue background.
no matter what color i go with, i am going to paint both the back and left and right sides of the tank.

for fish i am thinking of a pair of Keyhole Cichlids, or a small group of Guianacara, with a shoal of Orange Von Rio Tetras, several sp. of cories, 3x regualr otocinclus, 3x zebra otocinclus, a few different sp. of small plecos, and 6x assasin snails.

well, the 2x4 frame stand is complete

i get home at 10:15am, and i will fill the tank and hook up the powerheads.

i dont have a filter just yet, but will have one by the 4th hopefully.
on the 4th i am picking up sand, a filter, and hopefully a couple lights.
the halide is a no go, my dad said no more hanging any lights in my room:evil:
so, i have decided to go witheither cf's, T5's, or if im lucky enough to have enough money to get one, or find a sweet deal on one i will get a 70watt hang on tank halide, like a K2 Viper or equivelent.
i will post pics of the stand as soon as i am home.

Make sure then you install a shelf... because the 2217 should not be sitting 48" below the tank. Best recommendation is 24". So install a shelf for the 2217 to sit on.

is it because the filter will have to work to hard to pump the water to the tank?
                          i will install a shelf.
but im thinking a 2213 might work ok?
                          what do you think?

Problem is that you have to much head height to over come for your filter which is why I am telling you to install a shelf.. Eheim tells you that the filter should be a min of 10cm (4") under the tank. Max head is 4' 11" per their manual.

Your tank is a 30g tank. A 2213 should be okie.
Its supposed to handle up to a 66g tank, but I prefer on the classic filters to say practical is 1/2 of what they can handle. The tank I have my 2213, it also has a AC110 and a odyssea 350 power filter with sponge fitted. This keeps my 58 clean.

                              alrighty:)

i will install a shelf and install the 2213.
i was also thinking of adding 2x AC 70 HOB's.
i think that because of the shallow depth of the tank, an AC 110 may be to much, and may disturb the sandbed.
