I just picked one up from HAW and i also got some lava rock...when i opened the canister up i saw that it came with the Eheim Mech which looks like the straw stuff and Eheim Substrat
should i use this stuff or use the lava rocks?

either will work fine, i use lava rocks, theres more surface area on the lava rocks, therefore will give you more BB's.
