Thought you might want to consider these.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

If it was easy, anyone could do it.

They used to be WIDELY available (Petsmart and Petco carried them...enough said). Just no one really brings them in any more. One of the few Asian cichlids available to the hobby. Very easy to breed and maintain.

The pelviachromis would be a good choice. Insofar as the red jewels, it would depend upon whether you got ahold of cristatus or lifalilli. The former would be fine...the latter get a bit large in my opinion.

One of the first chiclids I ever spawned. They were very popular in the early 70s before Rift lake chiclids became available. Haven't seen any at the LFS in a long time. They are kind of blah until they turn on their breedng colors. But then they are sharp.

Another good selection if you want to go the cichlid route would be Neetroplus nematopus...

Was leaning towards the lifalilli...they are smaller is adult size, an from what I gather not as aggressive towards other tank mates.

Actually the lifalilli if memory serves are the ones that get larger.

They're a brackish water fish, and I think your tank might be a little small for them. I've never kept them, but a few people on here have, and can probably tell you more. :)
