  • The Raffle Tank...what goes in a 30 Xtall?

The highlite of the auction for me was the end...I won the raffle tank. Its a 30 xtra tall...never had one, kinda cool. Hubby wants brightly colored fishes in it...so ya'll aughta have fun with this one. What goes in? need help on ideas from substrate-fish an filtration. I was thinking, some small tangs...but you guys can help. Keep in mind he wants something colorful, an I need something to eat my culls....so small, colorful, an aggressive.

If he wants colorful you could stock it with some cobra guppies and cories...some very pretty strains of guppies out there.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

That was my idea..another guppy tank, but he wants preditory fishes, an I could use some fish that eat my culls. I was thinking of making a rock pack for the back...I have a bunch of black slate, an some petrified that is dark, an is alot like slate. Was thinking of either white sand, or black sand for the substrate. So...with that in mind...an livebearers out of the running...

A pair of jewels would work, or kribensis, provided there are hiding places for the female to get away from the male if he gets too aggressive. I have a 30XH with 4 julies in it right now.

He wants lots of movement too.....I thought barbs...but, not sure. So colorful, aggressive(will eat guppy culls), active.....and will make use of the whole tank, with a rock pack/stack, an #3 blasting sand substrate.

Blasting sand (the last time I used it) took FOREVER to clean... actually gave up on it and changed it out for PFS. This was my first PFS and since then I have never turned back.

The blasting sand I got is about half the size of a BB, so not too bad. I cut a peice of eggcrate for the bottom of the tank, so I can more easily stack rocks without damaging the glass. An am filling the tank as we speak.....so I got a little time yet to figure out what to put in it...You have any ideas Zulaab?

As a cichlid fan and a fan of Lake Tanganyika, I would be looking at a shellie tank with some julies or other non-aggressive cave dwellers..
The tank is to small for something with really aggressive fish in it.

                My 2 c worth...

Isn't the tank too tall for shellies, they prefer the bottom I know, but what about all the other empty space in the middle/top area?

This is where I would add Julies, or one of the lesser aggressive cichlids.. the tank unfortunately to small to add cyps who would use the upper water column. They will outgrow the tank. You could start out by getting juvi Cyps, but within a year you will have to move them to a bigger tank...

Other fish you could go with is another favorite of mine.
Nanochromis fish, and congo tetra setup. The Nanochromis will like Kribs occupy the bottom of the tank and the Tetra's will occupy the top. If not Nanochromis then get a pair of kribs...

That's a pretty tall order! Colorful and aggressive is easy enough, but for them to be able to live happily in a 30XH is a different story.

I think rams or kribs would be good.

You could also get a group of "golden wonder killifish." They are active, some describe them as extremely aggressive, and will eat ANYTHING you put in the tank.

I picked up a betta at the auction, was light/white in the bag..an has now turned violet, with a light purple belly. Hubby named her bully..cause her face looks like a bull dogs mouth. She came from JBR #11, Pretty thang...very expressive in the face. What about yellow labs...ect?

What are the dimensions of the tank? Is it just like a 10g, only taller?
