I know this must be in a FAQ somewhere and I just can't remember, but why is there no saltwater forum here? Not enough interest?

Oh, cool.
Can't afford to do saltwater at the moment and I think I need more experience anyway, but I'd like to read what they say to keep in mind for the future.
Thanks.Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

momma says saltwater is da debil
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

You know what's funny, though? Despite my lack of experience and the more vivid colors of marine fish, I really like freshwater fish better. I'm sure I'll change my mind a little once I get into it, but to be honest, I'm more interested in the invertibrates available.Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Saltwater is awesome once you get into it but it's not for the faint of WALLET!!!! It's not too bad if you just want to do a "Fish Only" tank but when you start dabbling in a coral tank, get ready to drop some serious coin. Your experience level really isn't too much of an issue as long as you do some homework before you just go out and start buying up equipment. It really takes some planning beforehand to put together a successful saltwater tank.

Other than the initial set up, is there anything about the maintenance that costs more than freshwater other than the salt?Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

Depends, if you're going for corals there's the electricity bill for all the equipment plus all the supplements. Depending on the size of the tank salt can get quite expensive for those weekly water changes.
I can only speak for us, but corals are addictive and pricey. You think oh it's only 20 bucks here, 5 there and occasionally a 100, but once you add it all up you find out you've spent a couple grand easily. Not to mention all saltwater fish are expensive. I know we spent about $120 for our flame wrasse and $80 for our powder blue tang. Our flame hawkfish cost about $50 at the time. Spent $80 on our rose bubble tip anemone. I'm sure you get the idea.Karen
