    Re: Ellen's new Dwarf Puffers!

When we get a new shipment of dwarfs in they usually school around the tank for a few days till they get acclimated. then they start hunting, and once they are comfortable with food and surroundings they start picking at eachother.

Well, one has died. This is the reason I *always* qt any new arrivals. Another is not looking so great. I tested the water and it is all wonderful. With everything else that I qt, I use Parasite Clear as a preventatvie (all fish come with worms it seems). I haven't found anything saying yay or nay for the dwarf puffers and Parasite Clear. Any thoughts on this? The reason I'm wary is their lack of scales...

The qt tank has a cycled filter on it and like I said - the water parameters are fine. The temperature is also holding steady.

I looked around at the dwarf puffer forums and have decided to use the Parasite Clear to soak the bloodworms I'm feeding them. The one that wasn't looking so great looks fine now. I guess we'll see!

hope it turns out good for you, these little guys are super cool, i had to move mine to a little holding tank too cause i replaced the tank they were in and the substrate is leeching mad ammonia.

I'm sorry to hear one of your puffers didn't make it.  Good thing you quarantined the little guys.  I guess I'll be needing to get one now.

:(  Sorry one didn't make it. Keep us updated as to how they're doing!

So, I didn't quite understand...are you continuing with the Parasite Clear in the tank, or are you switching to just soaking the bloodworms?

                  Re: Ellen's new Dwarf Puffers!

I didn't put the Parasite Clear in the tank because I was worried about additing to for scaleless fish. I have always used it otherwise. They're eating the bloodworms from a cup of water with a half a tablet of Parasite Clear right up. That is info I got from dwarfpuffer.com. I know those people know a bunch more about those little fish than I do! LOL

The other 3 are doing great! The one that died was the smallest of the bunch, so hopefully the others will do well with the anti-parasite treatment and thrive!

Ellen, how are your puffers doing?  I just received the March TFH and it has an article in it on breeding dwarf puffers.

                      Re: Ellen's new Dwarf Puffers!

Tomorrow will be 3 weeks! The remaining 3 are doing very well, seem to be happy little guys. They love hanging out in the plants that are floating to provide them some cover. They sleep in them and hang out in there all the time. When I go in the garage though, they swim down to watch me and beg.    They flat out refused the Parasite Clear soaked bloodworms and after 3 days I gave in. I can hold out on the angelfish, but these little guys are just so tiny, I couldn't do it! LOL

I still plan on dosing them with Parasite Clear (in the water), but I need to get more. I see that other dwarf puffer keepers use Parasite Clear, so I feel better about it now. I'm going to treat them like any other fish that comes in here. I believe in preventative medicine in fish from pet stores.
