  • Algae eater bleeding from the booty

What on earth could cause this? It is at least 4 yrs old. Last water change was 2 wks ago. Other fish in the pond are not affected yet. No other symptoms.

When the fish remain stationary, red or brown worms hang out of the anus looking like a pom-pom
The fish is affected by Camallanus worms, which bear live larvae.

You will need to destroy the worms with a de-worming product.
You say bleeding, is this because you see a streak of blood behind the fish or is the anus just inflamed and very red ? It could be something different that is causing the issue. Pictures will help.

            Thanks
            Jesper

Not worms. Nothing hanging out. Spots of blood on the body around and in the booty area. Speckled with blood all around. Kind of like when you skin your knee or elbow from a fall and the skin has red spots where the skin was skinned off.

Suggestion would be to pull the fish, put him in his own aquarium, and start treating him with Metro. I would look for a de-worming product (dont know which one to use) but only if you see that there are worms in the fecal matter.

THANKS! Much appreciated. It's always sad to see one go, especially this way. It looks painful.

I am asking this seriously because when I frist got the Annectens they had red swollen anus and were bleeding.

I had to cure it with Tetra-cycline

I forget what Kim at Cichlid Forum called it...but used Tetra-cycline and it cured it.

ever hear of blood worms causing bleeding in fish?

the brand I have is Omega One Freeze dried blood worms for freshwater and marine fish.

Could this have caused a worm infestation in my fish?

Hmm, I think I remember hearing a few years ago that freeze dried foods can be dangerous and can harbor pathogens - but I don't know if this was talking about just tubifex worms or bloodworms, as well.

Doesn't sound like your pleco has worms, though... :?

I am sorry but every time I see the title I chuckle. Now on a serious note it would be helpful if you could pull him out and get a pic and also QT him.

I am sorry about the title sounding funny. I didn't want to be inappropriate. I did QT him and he died overnight. I threw the blood worms out just in case. I hardly ever fed it to my fish anyways. :(
