I think there are alot more girls in the hobby than we might think... they just dont obsess over it or become as addicted as we do. They have one small 10 or 20 gallon tank and are quite content with the way it is and just feed and maintain it. Whereas guys on the most part have addictive personalities and the need to know more about it and need more and more tanks and fish. Thats how we all found these forums is by looking for something or researching and stumbling across this wonderful world of people that are just as messed up.. lmao

The last of which was almost a year ago when a fellow female fish geek was over helping me break down my 125 SA tank and turn it into a Tropheus tank. I asked her as we were schlepping our 8 th heavy bucket of gravel, after shoveling it out of the tank, and dumping it onto a tarp outside. It is for tom boys and not girlie girls because of the inherent hands-on dirty, elbow grease, get wet up to your arm pits and ruin your nails kind of hobby.
I do laugh my tukkus off tho to hear dudes, AGONIZE about color scheme, feng shway (spelling?) and other typically girlie things. And in this hobby, men fall victim to obsessing about acquiring "brands" (species) and colors (morphs or variants) and multiple tanks (shoes and purses) like a lot of chicks do.
)I will openly and shamelessly admit that I like being in a room with a bunch of guys at the meetings!!!
Sure there's some technical stuff, but I think that is daunting to alot of girls only because they were taught that that sort of stuff is "not for girls" and not because they can't figure it out.
I personally LOVE comparing and contrasting all the gadgets available. I have to disagree with the non artisitic part, because you do have to have a sense of balance and imagination to pull a tank together and make it look cool. (shhh, Thai) The Latin names make me happy. But I am a huge language buff/sponge so it comes easily to me.
I've heard men spout off about the toys on their tanks like they're talking about thier cars.
I'm proud, like all the other girls on here, to be a rare breed!!! I like it.

jenney please come have a chat with my jenn, knock some sense into her would ya.........lol............just make it clear boys, you can stay,me and the tanks will go!

I don't think its really fair to compare tanks to purses. Alot of guys collect different guns and cars too, would those be like purses and shoes... i dont think so so. Guys just like to have their toys. the only difference between MEN and BOYS is the price of their toys :)

I was able to answer my own question this morning. And the thing is, it didn't even occur to me until just a few minutes ago. So I dried my hands and sat down to type this up.

We tripped a breaker at 3am in one of the fish rooms (I believe it's because of a faulty lamp...I could be wrong). I didn't even realize it until I went in to turn on the lights at noon. Everyone was okay, EXCEPT in the Ikola/Petro tank. Lost a handful, most everyone else was laying on the bottom, panting. I think if I hadn't noticed when I did, the whole tank would have been lost. So here's why more women aren't into fishkeeping....

                          1. 3 hours of nonstop emergency response on above mentioned tank.
                          2. 2 - 90% water changes
                          3. Removal of approximately 150lbs. of rock...which is still spread out on several towels on the floor.
                          4. Discovery and removal of dead fish.
                          5. Discovery and removal of 'almost' dead fish and resuscitation attempts using Home Depot buckets and air pumps.
                          6. Tshirt is wet, up to and including, both armpits.
                          7. Hair, which was clean, is now frizzy and sweaty and pulled back in a very unattractive ponytail.
                          8. One finger on right hand currently throbbing due to bending the (already short) fingernail back.
                          9. 4th and 5th toes on right foot scuffed from running into rocks mentioned in #3.
                          10. The tank has 2 additional sponge filters and an extra powerhead running on it right now. Cords running everywhere...definitely not a 'pretty tank'.

But the fish are swimming, and all look good. No one seems to be suffering any aftereffects. Luckily I only lost a few...mostly fry. But once I was able to stop, step back, and breathe for a minute, it occurred to me that I just answered my own question and had to type it up and share.
