I'm going to give a few examples of some stuff I've recently seen and I'd like to get your opinions on them.
The topic of cruelty to animals recently came up the other day because a restaurant here in town was keeping an Oscar that had hole-in-the-head and a large Jack Dempsey in a tank that was obviously too small for it. It made me think about a few other places that I've seen recently.
Example #1: I went into a certain LFS the other day and I saw a very large Petro stuck in a 20g tank (maybe smaller). He could barely turn around in this tank. He looked miserable and in the tank below him was another large Petro in the same predicament. As I understand it, these Petros are very rare and somewhat valuable, so why are they being treated so horribly? Directly in front of these fish was a huge tank that had 4 tiny fish in it....why couldnt the Petros live in this tank? I could understand it a little more if these fish were for sale, but they aren't. They are being kept by the owner and I personally feel like this is a form of animal cruelty.
Example #2: My brother and I have been to another LFS more times than I can count and seen huge birds in cages that are LITERALLY too small for them to stand. The birds are usually malnourished and seemingly in pain. I've said some stuff to employees before but I get the "shut your mouth" look and nothing gets done. They have a section at the back of the store that is for birds with larger cages but they shove these large birds in tiny cages and its disgusting.
Example #3: I can't remember the name of the store (the reason I cant remember is because I went once, saw some stuff I wished I didnt, and never went back). Anyway, I saw a similar situation as the one at #1 except the fish in this situation was obviously hurt. I discussed the fish with the store owner and she told me that her husband was not going to sell this fish because she had a "deformity". The fish had a slightly misshaped mouth....nothing that would effect the value of it. I told her that it bothered me to see this fish in the condition it was in and offered to take it home and nurse it back to heath and give it a healthy home, I offered a fairly large amount of money, she declined.
Basically, I just dont understand how people can open a pet store, and blatantly mistreat the animals. I really like going to the 2nd LFS, I think they have an awesome salt water section and they have a ton of quality dry goods but I'm never going back because I hate seeing those sickly birds dying in a tiny cage. Same goes for the other shop. The owner would rather a fish suffer and die before they let anyone hurt their reputation.
Any thoughts??
