for the record, I was not trying to act like i knew anything about the birds, which is why I ASKED for someone to explain to me how it was healthy for them to not be able to stand, the reason I start with "I am not an expert" is because i am not, and i dont want to give people the impression that I am giving facts, they are opinions and i am genuinely asking for someone who DOES know to explain it to me that's all.

either way, the bird thing was not the only example given. and to be honest...I think some people might be referring to two different stores! I think it is very obvious that some stores in Houston take better care of the fish/pets than others do. It is also VERY obvious which stores still care about fish and which ones just see them as "pieces" or inventory. I think it is very horrible that big fish get crammed into tiny tanks just because they didnt "work out" the way the owner intented to, yet they cling to them as if they were gold. To me, this shows a high level of greed. Same goes for keeping a fish/dog/cat/whatever caged up because it has a disability or malfunction. It is almost as if those owners put themselves on a pedistool and are far to good to have ever sold a "bad" fish/animal that might hurt their so-called "reputation". I give very huge props for those stores that really try hard to keep a nice, well kept store...as well as those that recently have put in work to make the store look a lot better. Other than just argue about who is right or who has a bigger educated brain, lets just hope that some of these stores take the time and effort to fix their weaknesses.

To be fair, I don't think there was any argument about who was right or wrong. Optional views and theories were offered. Questions were asked to determine if there could be another explanation. No one wants animals to be mistreated. And I don't think anyone was arguing that it doesn't happen. We had people offer their views from consumer, employee, and owner perspectives. To me, that seems like the most successful thread possible. Honestly, I find one-sided threads to be boring because I'm not learning anything. It makes me happy when we can all share our different opinions and experiences without getting nasty and fighting about it. Healthy debate is extremely valuable because it prompts people to go out and do some research. At least that's what it does for me. I actually learned quite a bit about the care of baby parrots today because of this thread. I have no idea what I'm going to do with that knowledge, but I'm glad this thread influenced me to do it. :)

First off, I wanna say that baby birds are simply the most adorable things EVER.

              :)

But yes, they are COMPLETELY helpless when they're little like that. I'll try to find some good links of babies on YouTube to post here, but having raised my bird since she was almost that helpless, I can tell you firsthand that they're all head and tummy ( and crop) and they've pretty much got nothing on them to support all that weight. Hence the safety of the nest. They're born with no feathers, and are pretty much unable to do anything at all except open their mouths to be fed, and when not in the act of being fed, they're swaying back and forth, "shivering" with their wings (a "begging" gesture for birds, kinda like holding out one's hands) and making these God-awful (but CUTE) noises. Similar with a baby human, they can't walk or stand up on their own, and definitely don't have a lot of support for such a big head.

This is the perfect example. Everything about this baby is completely normal baby-bird behavior. Lots of people think they're the ugliest things in the entire world, but I beg to differ.

P.S. Remember, this one's already a month old. So you can only imagine what it looked like a couple weeks ago. :)

That's about what Prometheus looked like the first time I saw him while he was being hand-fed. It's amazing how fast they grow out of that stage. A few months after that he was running up my shirt, grabbing my lip in his bill and bobbing his head trying to get me to feed him.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

You bird lovers should start a thread journalling what it takes to properly keep a bird. I would be VERY interested to learn about it!
