Depends on the age and the growth rate of your fish.

Generally, I look at the proportions between eye and head, compared to body length. If they dont look the same as they do in wild pictures of them, then most likely you are stunted.

In the world of Tropheus, the published growth rate is 1cm per month. You should have a full sized adult Tropheus in 14 to 20 months. A lot depends on TANK SIZE, diet, and water quality. For females, it depends GREATLY on how early you allow them to start holding, once that energy shifts from growing to spawning, you'll end up shortening the growth of the females.

Anyway...look at the body porportions eye and head to body length.

      Depends on the species also.

Can't speak for others but for discus a quick way is to compare the size of the eye to the height of the body at the eye.
