Does a mag 5 pump pull or push water best? Or does it make a difference?
I'm building a home made filter conversion from a 50 sq-ft pool filter.

So I need to put the pump before the filter instead of after the filter. I was hoping to put the pump after the filter to draw the water through the filter. That would be a better fit in the setup that I have. sunrise
The 50 sq-ft pool filter is for a 100 gallon stock tank that is outside sitting on the ground. The filter will sit next to the stock tank with pvc plumbing inlet and outlet going over the side of the tank. I was thinking of using 3/4" or 1" inlet size and 1/2" outlet size. Since the filter sits next to the stock tank, the only problem that I can think of is purging the air out of the the crossover pipes to get the siphon started. sunrise
since you're gonna use mag 5 which is an internal pump, i assume that you gotta put the pump inside the pool filter or tank. have you thought about building wet and dry filter? if not, you can see the picture from this link: http://www.theoscarspot.com/download/file.php?id=6836
if that was the filter you wanted to build, you would place the tank on the stand, and place the filter on the ground. the gravity drag water down from the tank into the filter( running through medias), and then the pump will push water back to the tank.
about the pool filter, are you sure its 50 sq-ft, it sounds like too large for 100g tank, i used 20g tank which is 30"x13" to build my wet and dry for my 135G tank and its all good so far.
