  • Suggestions for three 5 gallon mini bow tanks

I will be setting a trio of 5 gallon mini bow tanks in my classroom this year.

I plan them all to be planted aquariums, with black substrate.

I am pretty sure one will be a cherry shrimp tank. I need suggestion on fish for the other two tanks. Anyone have any good ideas. I am considering doing 6 neons and a couple ottos(since is will be planted think could I get away with more neons and ottos?) in one and perhaps a pair of dwarf gouramis or a betta with something else in the other (maybe guppies or dwarf platies if i can find a few). Any tips or advice?

I think the cherry srhimp idea is great.

As for the 6 neons and a couple/few otos, I think that would work fine, as well. You might be able to get away with a couple more neons, but I wouldn't push it. :)

Have you thought about pea puffers? How old are the kids in your classroom? Not that it matters - I think any age kids (and adults) will find pea puffers cute and/or really cool.

Dwarf Livebearers are an option and are native to the area, other alternatives might be killifish especially the annuals. You could have them observe their hatching, growth, and breeding all within a span of a few months time.

My wife has a one eyed fancy gold fish and 2 cory cats in her classroom tank. My wife teaches 9th grade life science, what do you teach?

Good suggestion guys. I will be teaching physics (11th grade), but my classroom will probably have more animals in it than the biology teachers. I for sure will have some fish and a small colony of degus, plus whatever else I get during the year.

I really like the idea of the three shrimp tank, just have to find the shrimp for a good price first. I will probably get a larger tank for the classroom once i find on in the back that doesn't leak.

Ive never kept a puffer but they sound cool so I may research them a bit and see if I go that route.... I have a feeling I will have as many aquariums in my classroom as the marine bio teacher. :)
