  • Good rainbowfish species?

Hey, out of curiousity, which rainbowfish species would be good in a 40-br (36"x18" footprint)?

I'm looking for one that will hopefully stay together, but that I can get a decent-sized group. . . like 10 or more. I have some ideas, but I want to know what you all think.

I'd also like to hear about the best tankmates. . .

    Thanks!

I'd go with the featherfins or the celebese rainbows if you're looking to get a good sized group. They both school really well, they're beautiful, and in a 40-breeder you can fit a ton!

Edit: For tankmates, that all depends on if you're looking to do a biotope and stay within the habitat area for rainbows, or don't care too much and are willing to get fish from other continents (i.e. a large school of cories would do really well, but they're not from the same continent).

Ok, then I'm in the ballpark, I thought featherfins, celebese rainbows, possibly M. praecox, or even Pseudomugil gertrudae.

I'd like to keep it somewhat biotopish, so tankmates would have to be from that region.

I'm having the hardest time deciding what to do with these tanks. I always do. I've flip-flopped on them so much. . . I think the other 40-breeder is going to be cardinal tetras, a group of Corydoras, and one species of cichlid from the following list: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, Mikrogeophagus altispinosa, Laetacara dorsigera, or Apistogramma borellii. I'll probably end up throwing in an Ancistrus, too.

Similar set-ups, and yet, so different!

I would do a shoal of featherfins like MB suggested and a small group of Praecox Rainbows. Nothing like looking at a group of mature fish.

Yeah, I'm thinking that's the route to go, too.
