  • I saved him.

I was doing water changes on on my tanks today and decided to be nice and do a water change on my wife's tank. she has a 5 gal with a one eyed fancy goldfish named "Willie" and a small cory cat. I did about a 50% water change. I usually just use a large cup to remove some water, but this time I decided to siphon the gravel. About an hour and a half later while cooking diner she yells at me that her fish are dead. I looked at the tank and the cory was dead and Willie was gasping on the surface. I immediately knew I screwed up. Poured in half a cap of PRIME and started to use a cup to oxygenate the water. After a few minutes I remembered I had some ammonia remover granules in a bin of fish stuff, so I put them in a small net and hung it in the tank. Continued to poor water from the tank over the net and oxygenate for about 20 min. It has now been about 3 hours and Willie is swimming good.

Thanks to previous threads I had the knowledge to know what was wrong and calculate an idea of how to fix it. Thanks HFB

how did changing some water cause that? I thought corys were catfish that could live in horrible water conditions. Did you not use declorinator?

I think it was a combo of mixing up the gravel to release stored ammonia and only used a drop of PRIME for the initial water change.

Yea that happens with gravel. Switch to sand and it will not happen near as bad. Just run your fingers through it or a pc of pvc. just stir it up a little. I do 1/2 of the tank every w/c. Good thing you did not kill Momas baby.

Still swimming, I think he may make it. I am trying to convince her to let me switch her tank out for a Fluval Edge or bigger. I think it would look good in her class room.
