  • Adding wood

I currently have a few small pieces of drift wood in my tank (red stuff smooth on one side with holes/grooves on the other). I recently got a very large piece of drift wood from someone. I am not sure of the type of wood, but it is very dark. I have been soaking it in water for a few weeks and it has finaly sunk. Do you think it would be OK to add to my existing tank or should I not risk it and just save for a startup with the next tank. While soaking it did get some kind of snot growth coming off of it. It wiped off
    Thanks

I would put it in another tank if you have one lying around and fill it up with water, let it sit for a week and check to see if the parameters of the water change. Thats what I did with my pieces that I got of f the beach after I soaked them in my hot tub and pressure washed them.

the slimy "snot" was just fungus, pretty much the same kind that grows on uneaten food left in the tank (thank you Traci) It goes away after a while or plecos and other algea eaters can eat it too. It should be fine to add to your tank, just expect it to turn your water a little brown for a while. (this can be remedied by adding some purigen to your filter)

I decided to add it to my discus build instead of adding to existing malawi peacock tank.
