  • Hikari and New Life Spectrum are not quality foods

    Or are they.

So I went to a fish store today that I've been meaning to check out for a while now, and after looking around I figured I could use another bag of Hikari for my South American tank. I asked the guy (who was polite by the way) for a bag of Hikari and he said they didn't carry it, because it's not....good. Hmmm. I then asked for some NLS, which I already have for my african cichlid tank, but I figured I'd buy something since I already made the trip there. He told me it was actually worse than Hikari, and that he knows the founder of NLS personally. I was like yeahhhh......well that's cool *awkward*. I would've asked about Dainichi but it was already getting ridiculous. Thoughts please.

    Seems suspect to me.

I have nothing but good things to say about NLS and Dainichi and I have nothing to gain if you buy either. I personally like the Dainichi better.

My fish eat nothing but NLS Thera A and Dianichi. I think their growth and color speak for themselves.

Geoff's tropheus eat Aquarian Flake (a pinch per feeding) and NLS (about 85-90% of each feeding). I have also started feeding NLS to some of my fish. I don't have to claim that Geoff's fish are some of the biggest I've ever seen (because I'm sure that anyone who's seen his trophs can agree), and I can honestly say that since I switched over to NLS on some of my tanks (both at home and at work) the fish that have been eating NLS for the past few months have grown noticeably and look much better, even against my thinking that they were finished growing.

In summary, anyone can say what they like, but for me, results are convincing.

I can honestly say that I had a few fish (Ghost Knife, Clown Loaches, and a Bushfish) that were notoriously picky about food. I had to keep a variety of frozen food in the freezer or they would just not eat. I tried NLS Community on a few individuals advice and they devour it! It is the only food I have ever seen them go after with a gusto. I am convinced its a great quality food.

I've seen stores bash on both NLS and Dainichi ......... but I also noticed that it's always the stores that don't carry NLS and Dainichi .

Btw....what did that store suggest was better food than NLS , Hikari , and Dainichi ?

I agree with everyone, and results do speak for themselves. He was really polite so I'd rather not mention the store name. I just wanted to see what everyone thought about the "crap" food that we are all feeding our expensive fish. But yeah, this crap food has been working for me for years so I'm not gonna buy some random pellets in a random storage container. Oh yeah that's what they had. Cichlid pellets in clear plastic containers.

If it doesn't have a label telling me how much protein, etc. is in it, I am not going to buy it.

My guess is that LFS makes more money selling the food in plastic containers.

I had a similar experience in an LFS but don't care to "bash". I have had nothing but good experiences there except the food thing.

I don't like Dainichi coz my all the various fish I own spit it out and it clouds the water. I ended up giving it away or feeding it to my turtles. They LOVE NLS and Hikari though. My bichirs are especially fond of Hikari massivore Delight.

Since I live in the hinterlands, and don't know who sells what, just which LFS in the Southwest Houston area DO carry NLS?

there are tons of good, quality foods out there. I keep some extremely expensive fish and I feed my fish NLS and tetra color bits along with blood worms..IMO the best food in terms of a combination of versatility, price, and quality is tetra colorbits hands down (IMO). NLS is great food and very balanced but horribly over-priced, however i still use it as a staple in my fish's food. Tropheus keepers almost 100% use NLS as a staple but i personally used tetra color bits and NLS with my dubs, and they grew and bred awesomely. so everyones got their opinions but mine are that there is many awesome food choices out there. NLS, Tetra color bits both being one of them.
