Well, I bit the bullet and swapped out my ugly gravel for PFS this afternoon. Not too bad, but definitely not something I'd want to be doing every day. The process went pretty smoothly; the only problem I had was that my biggest pl*co decided to flare while I had him in the net going back into the tank. He got the spines on his cheek stuck in the mesh and was none too happy about it. I finally got him dislodged, though, and he seems to be doing fine now; he's currently sulking under the drift wood (I'm hoping he doesn't decide this is his new him and try to get the female to lay eggs, that would not be bueno)
As you can see, I dumped some of the old gravel into some hose and put them in the tank to keep up my bio-filtration until my sand gets full of bacteria. Not terribly attractive, but then it's not much worse than the "pre-filter" I've had on my HOB intake since fry started showing up. I was planning on making some other changes while I had everything torn down, but:
A) Petco/-smart's anacharis looked horrible, and I didn't have a chance to go anywhere else.
B) I was afraid to make a new cave out of the flagstone I have to replace the fake rock one, 'cause I don't want any more pl*co fry!
Speaking of, I may be looking to get rid of some more of my bristlenoses soon, 16 is too many for my meager aquarium. I've got one that I'm pretty sure is female that's probably big enough for someone to take. Anyone interested?
