A few years ago I got my wife (at her request) a small tank for her classroom (she is a science teacher). The tank is a 5 gal. hex tank with filter in hood. It is a rather weak filter. She originally had a fancy goldfish, but after a few years it died. Now I need to redesign the tank for her.

The problem: She will not maintain the tank the way it needs to be done. Water changes will be few and far between. The last fish died because I did water changes and it shocked the fish since it had not been done in almost a year.

Solution: Please give me ideas on what to do for this tank as I am a big tank guy. It will be in a 9th grade science classroom. I am also working on a 10gal terrarium for her (thanks Tim).

Betta would be good. Add some slow growing plants such as anubias to help with the nitrates and lack of water changes and you could go with a colder water fish such as white clouds or galaxy rasboras. Or you could do a native tank with ludwigia, killifish, and ghost shrimp.
